Unlike subsequent years’ McDonald’s promotions in Japan, 2002 featured opaque, sealed booster packs that were tied to recently released sets. Later years would have other distribution styles such as unpeeled sheets, or transparent plastic sleeves.
Each of these boosters had 1 card in it. They were tied to The Town on No Map (地図にない町) and Wind from the Sea (海からの風) sets in Japan that released March and May 2002 respectively. These two sets would later form the Aquapolis set when released in America.
2002 was also unique in that there were 2 promotions. The first occurred earlier in the year from January to February, while the latter occurred from May to June.
The Town on No Map McDonald’s Pack (Series 1)
The first 2002 McDonald’s series was available during January – February 2002. With each Happy Meal purchased, customers would receive one of these packs that contained a card from The Town on No Map set with alternate art. There were 5 possible cards:
This promotion was ran alongside the McDonald’s Original Minimum★Pack campaign, where customers could purchase a 6-card booster for 180 yen.
Wind from the Sea McDonald’s Pack (Series 2)
The second 2002 McDonald’s series was available during May – June 2002. With each Happy Meal purchased, customers would receive one of these packs that contained a card from the Japanese Base Expansion Pack set, or the Wind from the Sea set with alternate art. There were 9 possible cards:
